  • Focus and zoom in on the head as much as possible without sacrificing sharpness.

  • Outdoor light is good.  Try to avoid external shadows on the subject or light directly behind the animal.

  • Hold the pet's favorite toy near the camera.
  •  
  • It may take 10 or more photos to get ONE good one suitable for a portrait.

  • Be patient.  If your pet is not "cooperating" wait and try again.
  •  
  • The best photos for drawing are not "straight on".  Try to get one with the head slightly turned or at a slight angle.  The animal doesn't need to be looking directly at the camera.

  • Pictures that are too far away or the image is not clear will not work.
  •  
  • Try to capture the "mood" you would like portrayed in your portrait--whether it be happy and playful or more of a serious and dignified pose.
